Bar Group
The Sherwood Bar Group helps barristers’ chambers to:
- Review and, if appropriate, re-design their management structure (including assessing the actual or potential roles of Head of Chambers, Management Committee(s), Senior Clerk, Chief Executive, Practice Manager)
- Improve the effectiveness and efficiency of their clerking and administration teams
- Develop a strategy / business plan that creates a long term direction for the set
- Find out what their clients think about the service chambers provides
- Improve financial management and develop and implement the means to increase the profitability of chambers
- Design and implement imaginative and practical marketing, business development and client relationship management programmes
- Gather and use the know-how of their members in a systematic way
- Use IT appropriately
- Develop the management, marketing and people skills of individual members in order to improve their performance
We do this by:
- Undertaking management consultancy projects
- Facilitating chambers and team meetings
- Providing tailored management and skills training
- Undertaking client research on behalf of chambers
- Coaching / mentoring barristers and senior support staff as they perform their demanding roles
- Providing interim management between senior appointments or to provide additional support during a major project e.g. a move or merger
- Reviewing your Pupillage process, providing additional support sifting applications or to delivering training to improve your interviewing techniques
We also provide assistance to individual members applying for silk or a judicial appointment. Individual coaching sessions can help applicants as they complete the lengthy application form and prepare for the new style competency based process and interviews.
To work effectively with the Bar, whether that’s with chambers, individual barristers, clerks, managers or administrators, it is essential to understand the individual character of the profession, its culture, attitudes and working practices. The consultants in the Sherwood Bar Group all have extensive experience of working in chambers and / or of working with barristers as consultants.
Examples of our work include:
